Unemployment only counts people who are still actively looking for work. When people give up the search, they disappear from the rate entirely. The number can go down while fewer people are actually working. For Black women specifically, that's a very real possibility sitting underneath a headline that looks promising.

This is for the Black woman who has been documenting, explaining, enduring, recalibrating, over-functioning, and still somehow being asked what she plans to do to make everyone else more comfortable. This is for the woman who is not yet ready to announce her exit but can feel the exit forming in her body.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, I want to say something plainly: We cannot keep calling survival leadership.
