We often call this salary negotiations, but we should actually focus on total compensation. Total compensation encompasses all types of monetary payments to an employee. For current employees, this includes base pay and incentives like bonuses, reimbursement programs for childcare, travel, and professional development, among others. For new hires, total compensation in the hiring year might also include a sign-on bonus. Rethink how you discuss your financial package!
